I just recently bought a Boat that has a 2005 Evinrude Etec H.O 200hp engine. Wow this thing is ridiculous quiet and runs great. But after running only a few times it started giving a little trouble, it always starts and idles perfect on first turn of key, when I put it in drive it will bog down and go dead?? , I can pump the choke while giving it gas and it will blast right off perfectly?? its very frustrating.. it doesnt do it all the time is whats got me confused  . has anyone had this same problem or can help me out?/ I love the engine and its performance. could it be an injector issue?/// thanks in advance for any help

What choke? This is a DFI engine.

As said above it has no choke. Take it to a dlr and have him hook up his laptop to it and see if there are any codes.

Ever notice any alarms when the bogging down happens? If so look at your System check gauge (if you have on installed...you should) does it light the check engine light and set off any alarm? If so it might just be some water in your fuel. The question about the system check gauges is important, because if the problem is caused by a sensor or water in the fuel, it will give you notice. If not it could be anything from a water damaged injector to poor fuel flow to the engine (stopped up filter, bad line etc.)which would be another mechanical problem for which their will be no codes. If you have system check gauges they may not sound the horn (if it is broken) or set off a light if the gauge is faulty, but watch them closely to see if it is trying to give you a warning.

The choke statement tells me that you are getting a false test on what is happening. ETecs do not have any wire that will activate a choke from the key switch, because one doesn't exist on these engines. :)

Be careful with taking it to a shop. Get reviews from buddies or on the internet (local boards) before you take it that shop. I know a lot of shops that rely on codes, and if one doesn't throw a code all is good, until the motor takes a dump for a mechanical problem the computer has no way of telling you about.

Thanks multimech . I have never owned an Etec and all my experience is with an engine that you can choke from the key switch lol Im trying to learn all I can about this engine,, but at any rate no there is no alarms and all gauges and lights read perfect.? Why does the key switch pump in and out like that? , to me it just about has to be fuel related it seems, all my experience over the years are with carburated engines so i really dont have a clue on this one, I am gonna check the filters and lines first and go from there. Thanks again for your help

the key switch pumps in and out, so as I have no experience with this engine I just assumed it was a choke. So what does the key switch do when you press it in? Nothing? whatever it does it absolutely will stop the bogging and make it catch fuel every single time, I will supply video if I need too.

Went out fishing today for 5 hours and had Zero problems! ? I ran a can of seafoam through this 7 gallons of gas so maybe that freed up any problems that may have been in the injectors?? , I have had nothing but good experiences with seafoam over the years. Like I said before the engine runs too good to be a major problem, I am gonna go ahead and replace the fuel filter and check on a new set of plugs. ? is this a good idea? . Thanks again for the help

If you replace the plugs, you may not be aware that they need to be indexed with the open gap of the plug in the proper location(toward the injector). Look at your existing plugs before you take them out & you will probably see a black felt marker line on the ceramic. The last mechanic did this so he could tighten the plug in & stop with it indexed.

You do not want to overtighten new plugs, so you may have to remove one that does not want to easily index & place it in another hole.

If they are not indexed, then that may even be part of your problem. Purchase a owners manual.
