Guy calls and says his motor has no spark.
What's the first thing I should be looking for?
I haven't looked at it yet, probably tomorrow.
I have a DVA
Thanks

First thing I I would check is the lanyard, then I would check spark. If those aren't the problem Then find a CDI ignition guide and do the tests.

Yams don't use a trigger. Either a pulser coil or a crank position sensor initiates electrical discharge from the CDI assembly. Sometimes both are used.

I would think that this did not come out of a Yamaha service manual.

Where did you find this?
some kind of aftermarket thing maybe

CDI electronics use to have troubleshooting info online for a lot of different brands of motors and they made aftermarket CDIs for them also

outboardignitiondotcom is where I got it from.
They sell CDI aftermarket parts.
CDI no longer has a free web site for repairs.

I have no manual for a 90.

Seems that sight sells CDI electronic aftermarket parts, but do not list any newer for the 90 along with the troubleshooting guide from CDI

I guess they used different names for parts back in the old days
now a days they use names like the CDI, lighting coils, charging coils and pulser coils

99yam40 if you have the manual? if this is the 3 cylinder 90 2 strk, as I recall it uses a pretty standard CDI ignition. No lighting coils on that motor. Also no crank sensor on a carbed 2 strk. What you have for diagnostics may work. That motor pretty much stayed the same through out its life.

Looking at part breakdowns the 2 stroke 90 used a crank sensor since 92.
from what I remember seeing they used 2 pulser coils and one crank sensor to tell the CDI when to spark the plugs.
My 99 C40 uses 3 pulser coils to do that
they do not show separate lighting and charge coils on the 90, just sell a stator assembly that contain those coils.
My C40 shows you can buy and change then separately

Only one pulser coil.

I don't think that crank sensor does what you think it does. Hint what else showed up in 1992 Yamahas. But I do like how you and your dad can't do anything by yourselves.

I though they used one each for #1 and #3 with #2 being created with input of the CPS.
Maybe that was some other motor
It is difficult to keep up with what is doing what within any given Yam.
