The shift from forward or reverse to neutral on this motor is very stiff. It takes two hands to shift back into neutral. Is the "detent" controlled by an adjustment on the motor? Or in the control. I have a single handle top mount control. No neutral safety button to push. When I originally received the boat, the control was very loose. I asked the dealer to adjust for a firmer detent and now it's too hard. I tought it might loosen a bit over time. I'm unable to get boat back to the dealer anytime soon. Nothing mentioned in the Merc repair manual about this topic
Thanks,
John

1.Disconnect the cable at the motor, then try to move the shift lever, if the lever is still stiff then the problem is either in the control box or cables
2.Do the cables have any tight turns, try rerouting the cables.
3.Most control boxes have a friction knob, Merc boxes have the knob at the front of the box, try loosining it
4.If after step 1 the control lever moves OK then the problem is in the linkages or gearbox. try shifting the shift slide with your hands
Good luck
