2005 5.0 MPI Power Steering Pump Cooler?

Good Morning (some of you) :D,

Last week I was picking up winterizing materials for the Sara Belle. This is the first time I have ever done this, however it looks "fairly" straight forward. The only question I have is in regards to the power steering cooler and it's location.

The boat specialist at Hallberg Marine says every Spring he sells a ton of Power Steering Pump coolers because people forget or don't know that they need to be winterized as well. He told me to pull the hose and drain the water out - fill the block and manifolds with anti-freeze and then crank the motor a couple times to get anti-freeze into the PS cooler. Problem is, I don't know where it is or what hose to pull for draining?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ollie

There is absolutely no need to add antifreeze to it if you drain it, air don't freeze.

Follow the hoses from the power steering pump, one will take you right to the cooler. It only has 2 cooling hoses to it, they are the big ones, the little ones are for the power steering oil. Just remove the lowest hose and the water will run out of the cooler.

Thanks Don.......

Why the "hootin' heck" does everyone (well, not everyone) recomend puting anti-freeze in?

Extra fail safe. Can't hurt to do it but not necessary if you drain correctly. I think it makes things worse because it gives false security.

Because they aren't sure of their work and think that will protect them. It doesn't. If you don't get something driained you sure can't fill it with antifreeze. Get a tall glass of water about one shot glass short of being full. Now put a shot of antifreeze in it. Do you think it's all good now?????

Here is another trick, fill a glass with air and sit it in the freezer. Does it break? No.
Fill it with antifreeze, does it break? No. Did you gain anything by using the antifreeze other than you now have to find a way to get rid of the antifreeze?? Again, NO

So why use it?

Being from MN I use anti-freeze after draining out ALL of the water. I then drain the antifreeze out as well and follow up with blowing out the block. It was something I learned from my father 40 years ago. Is it necessary NO. But for some reason there is a abnormality in the block, that you cannot see from the casting process which traps water, it is added protection. Zer gut.

I lived in Alaska, never lost a raw water cooled engine that was drained only.

I'm not visualizing his theory here with filling the engine block up with anti-freeze so it will reach the power steering cooler.

The power steering cooler on your engine is located at the rear of the engine. On a bravo or alpha drive the very first cooler the inlet water travels to from the impeller is the power steering cooler, then the water goes on to a few more engine accessories (including a one-way check-valve on newer engines) then finally reaching the engine block.

There is no recirculation back to the impeller from the engine block, just out the exhaust.

If you only fill the engine block and crank it over a few times, the anti-freeze should not be able to reach the power steering cooler unless you started adding the anti-freeze before the impeller.

Also, once you see the actual location of your power steering cooler you may notice it's up hill from all the other cooling accessories.;)

I am probably naming the hoses incorrectly.
I have 4 drain plugs. Two at the water pump, one at the thermostat and the other at the bottom port side of the engine. I was thinking of following Eddie's video because I have the exact same engine.

Ayuh,.... 'cause Boaters are pretty anal 'bout things, 'n especially love internet ideas for Easy things to do on their boats,...

Pretty much the same reasons 'bout a Million ignition coils are replaced every year...
No spark, change the coil, 'cause it's Easy....

Antifreeze is Easy, 'cause ya ain't gotta crawl into the bilges to find the danm drain plugs, 'n poke a screw into the hole to knock the crud outa the way...

Honestly,... It's a Sales ploy by retailers,.... nothin' more....

ALL the Marinas 'round here, store Dry....

As noted above,... Air, just Don't freeze....
