Side by side comparison of the two vehicles -

2005 Ford F150 XL 4x4:
4.6 liter v-8
231 hp
293 ft lbs of torque @ 3500 rpm
6100 lbs max tow capacity

2004 Dodge Ram Quad cab SLT 2wd
4.7 liter v-8
240 hp
300 ft lbs of torque @ 3200 rpm
8350 lbs max tow capacity

I sure like the 4wd ability of the Ford, especially if you get into some steep/slippery ramps. But I also like the full, four doors of the Dodge for everyday use, particularly with a young family. Towing capacity appears to be quite a bit more with the Dodge, but you shouldn't have any problem towing your 5000lb boat with the Ford.
If you can get both vehicles for an extended period for test drives, hook up your boat and trailer and take it for a ride. Find a steep incline similar to a boat ramp (or an unoccupied ramp) and see how each vehicle pulls your rig out.

Bottom line, take both vehicles for an extended trial period, then buy whichever one your wife tells you to buy.
:D :D

It appears the Ford is the better "deal".
I don't care for either rig however. Enjoy

The Chysler 4.7L V8 - 5 speed Auto is also in the wife's '02 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I can say it is an awesome setup. I am neither a critic nor a fan of Ford, but personally I would go with the 4x4. You may only need it once, but you'll be thankful for it.

BTW - I use my 1994 GMC K1500 for towing the boat.

i dont like either set up at all really. the dodge would be the better of the two if it had 4 wheel drive and the ford engines are WEAK. come on...231 h.p from a 4.6 v-8 in a full size pick up. that engine will struggle with your 5000 lb boat. IMO, yes i am biased, but you could get a chevy for that price with 4 wheel drive and even the larger 5.3 v-8 that has 300 hp and about 330 lbs of torque. I have a gmc yukon w/ the 5.3 v-8 and i tow my boat(about 3000 lbs) with ease. Im not saying that either of those two are bad trucks and that you shouldnt look at getting them, im just saying that maybe looking into a chevy or another dodge or ford would hurt either. my friend also has a 2002 durango with the 4.7 in it and he say "he hates the damn thing for towing" and has a hard time pulling a 4-place snowmobile trailer with 4 sleds in it for a total of about 4000 lbs.

we have the ford, its in the driveway.

we really had no choice except vetween these two trucks.

we made a trade in and had a 5 day test drive, with the dodge, and brought the dodge back wanting to just simply get our trade in back, but they sold our trade in, so we were between a rock and a you know what. so we had to BUY the dodge ram quad back again, after returning it already and cancelling out the deal. then we drove the dodge backhome, again. the next day we returned the dodge, again, the next day( today) and purchased the f150 and drove the ford home.

let me tell you.....

having driven the ford almost 200 miles just on the way home, its a day and night difference between the two. no comparison in the way they drive. the ford wins hands down 100 percent. i personally drove each truck between 200 and 300 miles and the ford completely kicks the dodges AZZ!!!!!!!!!!!

granted , yes, th dodge has 4 bigger doors, but the rest of thr truck sucked.

the ford has manual locks, mirrors and windows, as the dodge had power everything, but like i said, the rest of the dodge sucked!

this ford we picked up had 1200 miles on the clock when we got it, and its 100 a month cheaper payments, simply caus its newer and we got a better APR on the loan and it was a thousand cheaper to start with!

better truck, less money, i win!!!!

'Sorry, we already sold your trade in' is an old sales trick to force you to buy from them. If you didn't sign the title over to them they couldn't have sold it!
Anyhoots, you'll like the Ford. Congrats.

I have the F-150, it has been great, I have never owned any vehicle but a truck, 10 years of 2x4. The 05 F-150 I bought 2 months ago was the first truck I got with 4x4, I would never buy one without it again. It may only put out 230hp but I think the torque is around 290 plus for a few hundred dollars you could get a K&N cold air intake and a flowmaster exhaust and get a 40-50 hp increase plus an increase in fuel efficiency.

I tow my Proline with a Nissan Titan. I had a ford with a 6.0 diesel and it was terrible. The Nissan really has good power.

The testing K&N has done on the cold air intake gives an average power increase of 16-21 hp and a flowmaster exhaust will increase horsepower by about 10%. so 231 +16 = 247+ 25=272. 272-231= 41hp increase. (that is assuming a 16 hp increase so of course if we look at the high end that would be a total of 46 hp increase.

That sounds great, however if you installed those 2 items and ran it on a dyno I highly doubt you would see more than 20 extra hp and even then thats pushing it.

Be careful how you read numbers. Adding these performance enhancing items does not generally result in the horsepower increases being additive. Adding a K&N filter may indeed increase horsepower x%. But those tests are typically done on an engine with no other mods. Therefore, adding the Flowmasters may not increase horsepower 10% with the K&N filter installed. By the way, K&N filters (and other "oiled" filters have been known to fowl Mass Air Sensors if not serviced properly. If one adds all the "increased horsepower and fuel saving" devices the darned gas tank might run over.

Personally I think you made the right choice.

I really like the Ford Supercrew however for the 4 doors.
