Hello, I just joined because I recently acquired a used 50HP Mercury outboard. I was told by the owner that it was a 2004 and that the electrical system was fried. The owner said the "rheostat" went bad and fried all the electrical components in the engine. I'm pretty sure he must have meant regulator/rectifier. Does that seem right? I really don't know much about them yet and ready to learn.

Before I start working on it, I need to get it out of my wife's pickup truck and on a stand of some kind.

I'm looking at a specific outboard engine stand and a regular automotive engine stand. The automotive stand seems heavier duty, but I'm not sure about the height of it for the outboard. Any recommendations?

Finally, the reason I picked up this project was that I wanted a 4-stroke outboard for my little pontoon. It's a 15' x 6.5' Crest Explorer . Originally I believe the boat came with a 10hp 4 stroke with electric trim. A previous owner swapped that for a 25HP Evinrude 2 stroke. I'd like to get a 4-stroke back on it. I didn't realize how physically large the 50hp was until after I had committed to buy it. Do you think it's too big for my boat? I think it could make a very fun ride if I can get it going. :)
