Greetings:
Last year I bought a new 04 Johnson (Bombadier) 4 stroke 60hp for my new Alumacraft Navigator. The other day I was comparing specs and noticed the Johnson weighs about 125lbs more than the 4 stroke Mercury. Seems to be quite a big difference. Does anyone know exactly why? Im wondering if I should have bought the lighter motor. I assumed they were all close to the same weight.
Thanks...Kevin53

I'm a little surprised, even the bigfoot is 95lbs lighter. Don't know why, sorry.

Aldo

Re: 2004 Johnson Four Stroke

With the Johnson/Suzuki, the 60 is essentially the same motor as their 70--so you're getting the weight of a 70. With most other brands, the 60 is the same block as the 50 HP--much lighter.

The Johnson has a much larger displacement (I believe about 30% greater). That makes it heavier but I've also heard it's more powerful. Yes, the HP is rated the same but I'd be willing to bet the Johnson is faster out-of-the-hole.

I wouldn't worry about the extra weight--assuming you have a newer boat. The later model boats are designed to carry heavier motors.

Trout

Thanks Bill for the reply. I Love the motor. Its quiet, runs great. Wish it would troll down a bit slower though.

Kevin53

Kevin:

I repowered last year. Trolling speed was a major factor in my decision. I wound up with an e-tec. It gets down to 0.9 MPH on a fairly narrow and light boat. I was originally looking at the four strokes. My brother had just bought a Yamaha. The 4 strokes are sweet. In his, you honestly cannot hear it at idle speed. At times we wonder if it has stalled.

Good luck with your new setup!

Bill

You should be able to adjust the idle down about 50/75 rpms from specs.

It normally idles around 750 to 800 RPM. Is that something I could attempt myself? (turning down the idle)

Thanks ...Kevin
