My motor barely will start and definetly won't idle I rebuilt carbs and changed the bowls with no change can my problem be in my throttle body or somewhere electrical?

Re: 2004 johnson 115 throttle body ?

I'll check the primer solinoid this afternoon . My compression is 130 on the two right side cylinders and 125 on the two left cylinders . I checked spark with a spark tester and have spark . They get awfully wet when trying to start . I can get it to fire if I have it in the rev position. But it runs crappy till it dies. And lots of sludge coming out under prop . Do they make a rebuild kit for the primer solinoid or do they need replaced completely.

When and how did this problem show up ???---------Checked filters ??------The primer solenoid has been used since the early 1980's .---It has not really changed.--It is very reliable too.---Repair parts are available for it.---Does the hose bulb go tight when you fill the carburetors ?----Does spark jump a gap of up to 1/2" on an air gap tester ???----That is the only test most shops use !

Hose bulb does go tight but it takes like 6 or 7 pumps and makes feel as if I'm flooding it . The spark tester I have is probably a cheapie . But it does show that I have spark . I bought the motor a month ago and it idled and ran great for two weeks I ran it like 5 times . And the last time it barely started unless in the rev position . I'm getting lots of unburnt fuel also

if your primer red lever is in the wrong orientation, then you are pumping the manifold full of gas when you "prime the bulb"...could be a reason the plugs are soaked!!....the red lever is a bypass to pump gas into the manifold bypassing the carbs.....thus super enriching the mixture....if your motor is running good other wise, having the red lever in the wrong position will make starting difficult...

get a hold of the book and look at the orientation

Re: 2004 johnson 115 throttle body ?

It is in the run position and after pumping the bulb tight I tried to start it again and it will try but not fire . Some attempts are better than others but either way it won't fire up unless I bump it into the rev position and rev it real high then bring back to neutral where it runs like crap then dies. Sometimes after that it will start right back up but it almost sounds like it's running on two cylinders before it dies ???

It shouldnt be starting at all in reverse, has that model got a neutral safety switch on it? id assume so. If so that would be faulty and maybe why its cutting out in neutral

Not reverse but the out of gear reving position where you can rev the motor. I don't think it's the neutral safety cause I can get it running if i have it in higher rpms just don't like to do that .

Re: 2004 johnson 115 throttle body ?

too bad... I think at this point you have to get systematic and do one step at a time, without jumping all around..check compression, check spark one by one with a spark checker...
your synchronization could be out...and of course you might have electrical issues.... this outboard has an optical eye that triggers the firing..they go bad...but in any case you have to get systematic if you plan to troubleshoot yourself..

Hey, so what ended up happening? I'm having some issues with the 04' Saltwater 90...basically the same motor.

edit: Decided to make a separate post about my problem...but still interested in what happened here.
