Hey guys,

I had an issue last season with what i thought was the fuel pump. engine kept surging, then dying. Just got the boat de-winterized and its still having the issue. I have a video of what its doing.

looking for any ideas. The mechanic won't be able to look at it for awhile. I am pretty sure its the fuel pump. I filled up the tank before i stored it for the winter and made sure to put in plenty of stabil.

HELP!!

Thanks

Welcome to I-boats...unfortunately you have not provided enough info to assist. Nice short link on how to ask a question on I-boats:

Model number of your engine is positively critical. We don't even know if this is an EFI or carb'd motor and your video is too grainy to see anything. Video shows the tach, but we can't read it. And regarding your description, I'm very confused because it conflicts with your video. You say it surges and dies, but not once did your motor die in that video. It sounds like the idle is simply wandering up and down...or maybe someone was throttling the engine up and down? What happens when you give it some throttle? You make no mention of the sounds, but that whining noise sounds much louder than it should be. Is that noise as loud as it sounds in the video or is it exaggerated by the video?

With more info, I'm sure someone here can help you.

Re: 2004 Cobalt with Volvo pent I/O keeps dying..... fuel pump?

Last year I had a fuel related problem in one of my 2003 VP 5.7GXi engines. I thought it was a fuel pump, so started down that route. Upon disconnecting the fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump, I discovered a chunk of debris stuck in the elbow coming out of the fuel tank. This debris was enough to restrict flow and starve the fuel pump. I had been using Stabil, and ethanol treatment religiously, and I had burned several hundred gallons of gas up to that point, so debris in the fuel line was the last thing on my mind. I removed the debris, a brown, gummy substance, and she was back to normal. It may not be the case with your problem, but I mention it here, because sometimes the problem is that simple.

yeah i hope its something that simple. In my video is sounds like its the pump itself.

Thanks for the info though!

What you hear on the video is exactly what it sounds like in person. it makes the same sounds as im going 3500-4000 rpms. Ill be going down the lake, feel the boat slow down suddenly then tries to maintain the cruising speed. Feels like its not getting enough fuel. The same sound you hear on the video is the sound it makes while the boat is crusing. it'll do it through the entire tach range.

Ill get engine model number today and update the post

I am currently having the same problem with my 5.7L 2003 Volvo. The high pressure fuel pump is making the same noise as yours.

Air/lack of fuel causes pumps to make noise.

I had fuel pressure checked. it was around 8psi. Replaced the Fuel pump assembly $638.00 brand new and everything works fine now. No more high pitched noises and no more surging. I wish Volvo Penta would switch over to a mechanic pump like Mercs. One can only hope

Merc doesn't use mechanical pumps on V6 and V8 engines and haven't since the mid 90's.
