There are idle mixture, idle speed, carburetor/ignition advance adjuistments (called link & sync) so start screwing with stuff in the middle of those processes and you end up with more issues than you started with. If you intend to do ANY service work on any engine you are always advised to get a service manual for your specific engine. It saves time, frustration, and most important it helps prevent costly mistakes and spending money on parts you don't really need.
