Hello all, replacing my head gasket on my 2004 3.0. engine has been running good for last few months that I've had it- just recently noticing varying temperatures 160-175 up and down while running and water beading up where the head gasket meets the block. Decided to go ahead and replace the head gasket. while taking it apart noticed the cover over the cover on the starboard side on the engine had rusty gasket build up as well is this something that you can replace? I removed the 4 bolts holding it to the block and it doesn't seem to come off easily rtv gasket I'm guessing. Pic attached any input/opinion would be appreciated

Those two panels are access covers for the lifters. On mine I just used a small wire brush to scrub the rust off the upper edge. If you haven't disturbed the gasket you may be able to leave it alone and just clean the edge. If you end up with seepage you can replace the gasket after if necessary. Or you can just replace it now..

You can pick up a new gasket kit from your local autoparts store. just have them look up a pushrod gasket kit for 1965 Chevy II 2.5L. FelPro P/N# PS13223R

For some reason I can't figure out how to make a new post on my phone at the minute any suggestions would be appreciated. 2004 mercruiser 3.0 I just replaced head gasket and push rod cover gasket when attempting to start motor it almost sounds as if I'm doing a compression test and all of my spark plugs are out when they are not everything is together. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance -matt

Did you read the manual on resetting the head and push rod/ lifter adjustment after head replacement? Sounds like your pushrods/lifters are way out of wack.

Airshot I was a little confused by the manual don't have one but just from searching on here there was a bunch of debate on wether to tighten to 20 ft lbs which I did and that was not correct already fixed my error by loosing and tightening out the movement after cranking motor and rotating the rods all good now and running thanks
