I'm Mike and right about to purchase a 2003 Scout 162 sf from a repossession store. The motor on the boat is a 2003 90 hp yamaha 2 stroke, and there seems to be some problems. The carburetors ARE clogged and known of, and the motor also needs a new impeller. When the boat is put into forward gear, the propeller on the motor will spin freely going clockwise, but will NOT turn going counter-clockwise. Is there a transmission problem? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Prop should spin freely only in neutral, not in gear forward or reverse

Hard to say with out checking it out, but it could be the shift cable or linkage is not hooked up and it is not going into gear.

What happens when it is shifted into reverse?

The 90 hp Yamaha two stroke is usually a pretty bullet proof power plant--with a reputation for being very reliable.

Carbs get dirty, but they don't really clog. They can be pulled and cleaned and replaced in 30 minutes per carb--with no carb kit required. Outboards lower units have the forward/neutral/reverse gears that slide back and forth on a shaft. Lower unit new parts are very expensive when replacements are required, however.

Used parts, like lower units, are available through EBay, and there are many salvage yards with parts for this engine. A 2003 model is relatively new engine, versus my 1986 115 Yammie (that still runs great.)

You're essentially buying the boat blind, I assume. When you're in that position, your purchase price should be based as if you've got to replace the engine (with another used engine.)

It locks going in both directions.

Does it click when turned by hand while in forward or just free wheel in that one direction?
Seems like I have seen that before, maybe the shift dog may be letting it turn in the direction there is no strain or load on it and then falling back into place

it does click when turned by hand in the one direction. Do you think that's a major problem? Thanks
