Engine started ok a little rough but when we went to go it would not go over 3300 rpm. Last weekend it ran great, wondering if it is in protection mode since a buddy of mine came over and worked on electrical issues with dash and wondering if he messed something up. Anyone else have this issue. I was told to ask for Rod bolt he is the king of Yamaha questions.

Rodbolt does not post here anymore, but you can do a web search for Rodbolt17 and I am sure you will find him

Low oil or high temp can set RPM reduction, but it is not a protection mode.
If they set it to kill the motor to truly protect it instead of just reduce RPM,
then the boat and people in it could be in grave danger in certain circumstances
so they allow the motor to still run up to 2000 RPM so you can get out of the way and shut it down yourself
and do something to repair the problem or call for a tow.
Sounds like you lost a cylinder or 2.
Check compression, spark, and timing to make sure all of that is OK and then start looking at fuel problems

Thanks I will start checking what I can, cannot get it into shop until mid August.
It just seems weird it ran great until my buddy disconnected and reconnect a few wires while working on other electrical. It revs up fine just when you put it in gear it will not go over 3300 rpm.

It was in some kind of safe mode, we disconnected the batteries and reconnected it and the motor ran like a champ!

bad connection, low voltage, or something maybe,
never heard of these motors doing anything like having to disconnect batteries to reset anything like an cars
