I just bought a SF 16 Camp with a side console and a 30hp. Great boat and I'm excited to use it. Currently the transom feels solid, but I believe that its made out of wood (susceptible to rot). Can anyone confirm this and suggest materials to waterproof the transom? And or can anyone explain or redirect me to a post detailing a rebuilding a transom with new wood / or material?

Thanks a bunch.

if you keep your boat dry, store it with the plug out and follow the maintenance, you shouldnt have to worry about the wood transom for decades

if you do, its a one day project, maybe two, however a very small project none the less.

simply look around in the restoration forums.

look for woodonglass's old timers wood preservative. its spar varnish, turpentine and mineral spirits. it would work well for your transom if your worried about it.

Welcome aboard

Yeah the standard material in transoms is wood but as said it lasts for many decades even when not cared for 100%. Once rot starts in the the wood has to be replaced. Normally 2 layers of 3/4" plywood is laminated together to make up the 1.5" thickness needed and then sealed well.

Lots of restores on here to look through.
