I don't no much about engines but I am not getting any spark. Could it be a coil or something? What should I check next and how would I go about it? Thank you
We need to know your model, not the year. Do you have a 4-stroke? (that would be the only option in North America in 2003)? If so, do you have the 30A (with carbs) or the 30B (EFI)? Have you verified that the safety stop switch isn't activated? That's the most common problem, followed by an ECU issue.
You need a service manual, available from any Nissan or Tohatsu dealer. With that you can run the test's on the engine's electrical and ignition system to determine what part is not working correctly.
Your motor does not have an ECU... Just a CD. You will want a good analog ohm meter (not digital) and the Part # 003-21035-1 service manual, which is $45.00 from any dealer (yes, even Elvin, and even me), to diagnose the ignition system.
Besides your electrical issue, as a safety boating matter, you should replace worn safety stop switch for a NEW one. You wouldn't want driver falling on to sea and boat/engine circling or worst scenario, seeing you boat heading to Bermuda with you floating...
