okay all you really smart boat guys, what is the trick to getting enough room/leverage to break the two bolts loose holding the starter motor? It seems like the bolt on the front- (left side) requires a thin socket given how close it is to the side of the motor.

Lastly, are both bolts 1/2"? Appears that 1/2" is not the correct side for the bolt on the right side

I think you'll find they are metric.... 12mm IIRC.

i personally use a quality name brand box end wrench to break the bolts loose, if there is room i will try to get a ratchet with a socket to break them loose but there isnt always room. on much older engines ive had to use a socket that has been ground thin on one side for access between the bolt head and inspection plate

sometimes you get the starter bolts that were installed by a gorilla, so incredibly tight.....
