2003 Jonhson 150 kicks out of gear

I have a 2003 150 Johnson and it kicked out of gear when i started to plane off. The motor kicked into neutral. It worried me so i finished my tournament fishing around the landing. I haven't had time to get it to a shop yet so any ideas on what it may be or how i might could find out myself will be greatly appreciated!!! thanks

i had the same problem with my 1960's johnson. i doubt the parts are the same but my lower end gears were stripped out and would slip out of gear because the teeth were too worn down to hold together at high rpms.

you could either replace those gears in the lower unit or the teeth can be grinded to a point again. (i did the second option because it was 1960's motor and was cheaper)

problem starts out very occasionally and becomes more frequent the more you put it off.

thanks. thats what it sounds like to me too and i've been told that changing the gears isn't that hard, any truth to that?

Try adjusting the shifter cable first.
