According to my service manual I need Adhesive M Sealant P/N318535, and Gasket Seal Compound P/N317201 to do this job. This is the first time changing the pump on this motor, but I've done one other one before.

Is there something equivalent that I can pick up at NAPA?

I'm about to order the water pump kit & gearcase seal kit & my eyes popped out when I saw the price of the two sealants!

Also, any other tips I need to know?

if your just changing the water pump, everything should be included in the water pump kit. are you pulling the gearcase apart for any reason? if your just dropping lower unit then you just need water pump kit if your just replacing it.

I'm just dropping the lower unit and replacing the pump. The shop manual shows using the M sealant on several of the o-rings and gasket sealer on the new impeller plate gasket.

The water pump kit should come with new o rings and plate gasket so the gearcase seal kit would be an unnecessary expense. I have not used any sealant on any of my water pumps and had no trouble. I always use a lil vaseline on the impeller and cup, and on the powerhead side of the driveshaft.

Thanks for the advice, I just wanted to double check on that. I didn't use anything but grease when I did my Merc water pump a couple years ago. The pump kit has all new rings & gaskets.
