So I broke the skeg off my motor backing into a steep driveway. Local aluminum welder told me to bring the empty lower unit in to get it welded for $100.
Yesterday I took it out and the pinion gear is missing most of a tooth. So I looked in Canada and the ring and pinion set is CDN$580! In USA it is around US$360! Ouch. Is there anywhere to get a used or rebuilt or aftermarket bottom end? Jut wondering since gears, plus water pump kit, plus seal kit, plus welding is going to be expensive. How do you find a used or rebuilt one? Thanks for the tips!

Wow, called him and he said none available. Also he said if it is rebuildable then it is cheaper to do it myself.
So I guess I need a water pump kit, a gear rebuild kit, and a ring and pinion set. Going to be a lot of money for the gears. Now I have to find the best price on that.

Looks like I will be rebuilding. No one has one, and apparently if they did it would be over US$1500.

So I will order the gear set and water pump rebuild kit, and gear case rebuild kit. Where is the best price to get stuff like that?

Thanks!

you need the suzuki 4 stroke gear set, not the two stroke stuff. Different tool set also.

I have done a number of 70hp 4 stroke LUs. I gotta tell you....shimming that bad boy is a real task.
There are 4 places that shims are required, and if one is just ever so slightly off, the problem is magnified so that the last shim just will not come into spec.

It is TOUGH.

You will need the gearset, shim kits, special tools, and YOU MUST GET A FACTORY MANUAL. No way around it.

You can try www.brownspoint.com for your parts. They are the largest Suzuki parts place in the country, I think.

Also call Joe Eby at Advanced Marine in Interlochen MI. He does LUs. Maybe he can point you to the most cost effective solution.
