One of my 225s started knocking yesterday. The engine has 700 hours. The knocking is affected by rpm change and it occurs regardless of whether the engine is in gear or neutral. The abound appears to come from the block but is also audible from the midsection. The engine appears to be idling fine however since I shut it off when the sound showed up I don't know if performance in higher rpms is being affected. Any ideas?

Don't know size off hand but they are 4 blade props on a 28 Hydra Sport 52MPH at WOT 6200 on port and 5800 on starboard

Isolated the knocking to a section in between the engine and the lower unit. I've read some posts that state that there is a bearing in he housing ano be the lower unit that the vertical shad runs through but can find it in the shop manual. Anyone have any experience with this?

That would be the poorly designed mid-shaft drive Bearing (bushing). It's a bronze (colored), water lubricated bushing encased in rubber that sits in a "C" shaped receptacle. Held in by a snap ring and accessible after removing the lower unit.

The sound might be coming from the vertical shaft bearing. The shaft bearing sits below the water pump and is a pain to remove. Are you sure the sound is coming from the lower unit? Try removing the lower unit and start the motor for a brief period of time to make sure the sound is not coming from the block. You will need a special tool to remove the lock nut on top of the bearing. You will also have to remove the shift shaft and prop shaft carrier. Hope this helps.....

Well I initially replaced the vertical shaft bushing which was in rough shape but the noise persists. I did swap the unit to the other motor and was able to confirm that the knocking is coming from the lower unit. Any ball park figure on what that type of repair should cost?

If you have basic mechanical knowledge you probably can repair it yourself. I am not sure of the repair cost and I think an outboard repair shop charges by the hour. Your best bet is to have a shop diagnose the problem and go from there. You need a few special tools made by Honda to change out the lower unit's bearing. That is if you can separate the prop shaft carrier from the lower unit without tearing it up(acetylene torch to heat it up). Should not be too expensive to fix but good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Verdict two missing teeth in the forward gear. Shop does not rebuild because they claim broken metal damages other components. They are offering a remanufactured unit for $2k with one year warranty.
