I don't know a lot about these motors but I would like to know if this 8hp would be a suitable trolling motor for my 221 Starcraft Islander which is 22.5 ft and just under 4000lbs.
And what kind of price would I offer for a good long shaft example? I was thinking $1200?
Would a different prop change its slow speed characteristics?

If a 3.5/5 HP can "push" a J-24 sailboat that weights + 1.5 tons, a 8 HP will troll that Startcraft slowly, place a induction tach and play with prop pitch to assure you are at least at middle working min/max factory parameters at wot so engine works safely. Will not be able to ski with an 8, but will surely take you back home if main engine is temporalrily out of service. If possible test that engine before buying.

Happy Boating

I would agree with Sea Rider, I have an 08 Islander 221O/B with a 9.9 Merc and it does great. I use it for trolling but let me tell ya it will move mine and it is 24.6ft. You should have not problems as far as HP goes. Ho many hours are on that motor? For that price it should be like new. For a motor that is 9 yrs old that seems a little over priced to me. I am not sure how much a brand new one is for and 8 hp. I know a new 150 installed with controls is around $14k. Yes test run it good before buying. If buying from a private seller make sure to have the S/N run to make sure it is not stolen (just my advise).
Good luck with what ever you decide.

I don't know how many hours are on the motor. They are asking $1700 and they paid $2800 new in 2004. I was going to offer them $1200. My boat is a 2011 221 Islander i/o. I have been shopping and I have found a new 2009 Suzuki 9.9 with power tilt and remore for $2400. A new 9.9 Honda is about $4300.
I don't know if I can even hear it run as the owner has passed away and his daughter is selling it. Hmmm.

I have a 2000 Honda 8 HP and it is the smoothest, quietest motor I ever used at trolling speed. A very good motor but $1200 still seems a bit dear. I can understand someone being very fond of it (monetarily speaking) but you may be able to find something newer for that money but on the other hand I really love my Honda 8. For that money I would want to try it out on the water for a few hours, otherwise, nope.

Well put Pontoon. I would agree the Hondas are very quite, smooth running little motors. I know with my Merc 9.9 I have to look out the back to see if the pee hole is spitting water to know if it is running. That is one nice thing about the 4 stokes, quiet, no mixing fuel, and sip fuel. rico it might be a great motor, but I think they are asking too much for one that old IMO. I think pontoon is right for that price you can get on newer. I dont know alot about the suzuki, but one thing to find out on the import motors is to make sure you have someone local that is certified to work on them. Merc an Yahama shops are all over here. Honda and suzuki are a bit more rare. I would love to see some pics of your Islander as well.

I towed it home and put in storage (inside) without even unwrapping it.
I would also like to see it!
I am going to send them a mesage and tell them I am going to pass as we are to far apart on the price for the age of the motor.

Wow did you get it direct from Starcraft? Or did the dealer wrap it up for you? I did the same with mine when I had it shipped from MI. I am surprised you have not unwrapped it. That is the ultimate present there! Looks like the same trailer I have other than it is painted. These boats just put a smile on my face when I see them. Good call on the motor. Keep looking you will find something. As far as the kicker brackets go, I had the adjustable type on my last boat and I never had a problem with it. The nice part with the adjustable ones are the fact you can use a short or long shaft. I have a long shaft on mine, but both motors are long shafts so I get no cavitation when the water is rough.

I bought it new from a dealer but they only unwrapped part of the boat to do the initial setup. I choose a black trailer to match the boat but the funny thing is none of the 2011's have the "starcraft" branded trailer. I know its the same ezloader. Did they run out of decals? Does yours have a swing tongue?
I am going to keep hunting and I may just buy a new kicker as a crappy running motor can ruin a day of fishing.

Kickers have come a long way since 2003. High thrust props and more low rpm power are two nice things.
I don't want to insult the seller with a low ball offer so I will keep hunting. If this Honda was 2-3 years old I would go get it.

Re: 2003 Honda 8hp for 22ft boat?

I hear ya. I did a quick price check and they all seem to be starting at about 2K for new. I know for me I look at warranty, maintenance cost, and other owners. I think these days, they all have to be about the same in quality. I guess it all comes down to how much you are willing to spend. I think Honda has the best warranty at 5 years. Everyone else is 3 years I think. I know I got a quote on a new Honda 150 for mine. The shop here is selling them at cost for the motor, then I have to pay for cables, and gauges and labor. He quoted me about $14K. I didnt think that was not a bad price. Plus he would take my 150 in on trade. Mine runs great just not so good on fuel. My 150 is a 2 stroke EFI, and will push me at 42 MPH no problem. I plain in about 4 sec at just over half throttle. My only issue with a big Honda is the weight. They are the heaviest outboard on the market.

A 150 Honda is nearly 18K here. If I can buy a new 9.9 Honda for 2K in the U.S maybe I will wait until I am in Rapid City this July and pick it up there.

Yes.

I have a 2010 Honda 8 short shaft for sale. Under 100hrs. Had a fire on the boat and melted the paint on the motor hood. Had repainted a yr ago. Looking to get 1200. for the motor. Interested parties can e-mail me. Dave F.
