So removed carbs to clean them today motor stalling upon acceleration. In the process I found the plunger for the choke solenoid laying in the base of the motor. Now wondering if this would cause my problem? Gonna get new gaskets and clean carbs anyway. But I'm curious?

Definitely,

Have had issues with plunger not being correctly aligned inside solenoid, jamed when actuated with ignition key and lefting carb butterfly plate not evenly opened at 180? position. A correct plunger/solenoid adjustment is mandatory, check plunger with hand if closes/opens correctly inside solenoid. Lubricate butterfly shaft at both sides with some droplets of hydraulic red oil for butterfly to slide freely along choke solenoid.
