2003 FW. Freedom 180 . 3.0 engine mercruser block sx outdrive, mercarb is an 80s model. Questions first start after winter. Used starter fluid to get it going. Runs rich then falls flat engine dying. This is on the hose.It will start again first turn. Should I start and idle in the water before messing with it ? Will a load on the outdrive make a difference? Is it possibly old gas in the feed hose making it pop and run rich? Any and all help is appreciated very much. Always use stabilize gas cap and engine always covered.topped off with E free gas before parked here on the chesapeke bay

I took pictures before I disassembled the carborator. Suggestions about a possible used carborator replacement for this motor. Or Suggestions dialing in the mixture. The poping occurs as the engine warms . My instinct is to walk back and push down on the throttle to idle down. The way that po. Attached the controls cable is off a bit. Pictures show the carnage. I appreciate your help

For clarification
VP GL motor that a Merc carb was installed? Don't see an issue with it so long as it fits

Did it run fine last season?

No need to tune in water until it's running fine on a hose

The popping as it warms up motor might need timing checked, cross tracking inside the distributor cap or valve is sticking and not fully closed

If the carb doesn't fully go against the idle stop then check for something binding on the carb. The throttle cable is used to hold the carb at idle because there is no return spring like on a car

Thank you so you don't think it will stop if I bring out the the mixture screw to a richer setting?

It shouldn't, might sound different but a healthy motor will not die if mix gets a bit richer
