2003 four stroke 140 Johnson Check Engine Light No codes

2003 4 stroke 140HP Johnson check engine light on tach comes on. 2 different mechanics say the motor is throwing no codes whatsoever. Is it a faulty tach? I'm stumped.

It's probably a bad system check guage. I replace several every year. Common enough that I stock two.

Did the mechanics have J/E software? I am surprised they didnt just sell you a guage....
