Im working on changing the impeller out and just dropped the lower unit. Can you guys look at the pics and see if anything looks abnormal.
My concerns:
1)The drive shaft has a spot on it with some wear im worried about above the water pump.
2) inside the midsection there a pinch ring also rusty corroded
3)the drive shaft is rusty like a water intrusion.
4) Some evidence of salt water corrosion to to aluminum seems to be everywhere.

Is there a culprit or usual wear? Heres a link for parts info http://www.**********/parts/search/...A3 LA /WATER PUMP + VERTICAL SHAFT/parts.html

There is a midshaft drive bushing you should replace . (lower opening in first picture.) It's a bronze type bushing encased in a rubber housing, held in by a snap ring. The housing this bushing sits in is shaped like a "C". Over time, the rubber bushing will cold-flow into the opening of the "C" ,putting side pressure on the bronze bushing causing wear on the driveshaft. It's the poorest design I have seen on the Honda. This thing is water lubricated from a hole in the vertical water supply tube. If you get ingest sand or sediment through the pump some of this sand or sediment will also spray on this bearing and cause scoring on the driveshaft. Marineengine dot com has several threads concerning this problem. Later engines have a modification to help this problem, not sure how effective it has been.
