2003 8 HP 2 stroke Tohatsu water pumping question

With a new impeller this thing pumps water strong. But it does not seem to prime itself. When lowered into the water and started immediately it does not pump . Give it a few minutes setting in the water before starting and it seems to pump well. Whats with this ?

sometimes its better to instal full water pump kit not only impeler. this should help

Yes, The cup and plate only need a few thousandths of wear for it to not pump as well.

Was the motor highly used on fresh or salt water ? If on salt water and has already developed salt crusts or with saltsclerosis on all water passages a new complete water pump installation will do nada.

Paul, is the thermo on those 9.8 located inside the cylinder head ? doesn't have an external cap to directly access it, right ?

Yep, seems is the only Tohatsu model having a thermo living between the block and the cylinder head. Although that model is awesome, personally wouldn't buy it just for that issue. Can't possible make a thermo maintenance or check its working condition.
