I just bought a 2003 boat with a Yamaha 2003 250 hdpi. I'm trying to run the engine using flushing muffs. The tell-tail water stream is not showing. I let the engine run for a minute or so and then turn it off. I'm afraid to overheat the engine. Is my water pump shot? Needs some help. Thanks

No water stream with hose pressure applied, I would say yes you need to replace the water pump. The stream should be visable within seconds. Might ask the seller when they last ran the boat, probably cranked it without water to prove to a buyer it would crank. Only takes about 5 seconds to rip the rubber pump apart on a dry run.

Was the stream running at one time?

attach the hose to the motor flush port.
turn water on full force.
let water run about 3 minutes.
start engine at idle only and watch the tell tale.
could be a bad pump, could be a clogged tell tale line.
if the tell tale line is clogged and you run it very long it will burn up that water cooled regulator assy.
normally I dont tell folks you can actually run the engine on the flush port for several minutes at idle speed only, creates to much confusion.
biggest issue is to allow the hose to run long enough to wet the impeller assy before starting.
