2003 20HP Merc cooling OK? (Telltale temperature)

I replaced the impeller 3 years ago, and it hasn?t seen a lot us use since then, only for about 3 weeks each summer, and some weekends.

The water coming out the telltale gets too hot to hold my hand under although there is a good stream coming out. In 65 degree water, at idle it gets up to 125 plus; and after running WOT, and then idling again, it drops to around 125. I can put my hand on the cylinder wall, but only keep it there for a few seconds.

On my 2004 9.9, idling or running, the temp of the water coming out is only 80 and has a good stream, & I can hold my hand on the head.

It?s about time to change the impeller again, but does this all sound OK or is that too hot?

Good rule of thumb, when in doubt, change it out. The 20's did tend to run a little warm but not too bad. Most certainly warmer than the totally efficent and super well designed and reliable 9.9. That's why we love the 9.9's as kickers.

Thanks, I'll be keeping a careful eye on it.
