Hey guys! I'm new to the community.

I have a 2002 Four Winns Horizon H180 with the Volvo Penta 4.3L GXI-A engine(p/n 3869114 s/n 4012051786). I've tried searching for about an half an hour before posting this, So here goes:

Am I able to get an hour reading off this engine?

Yes. If you get it plugged in or get the Volvo Penta compatible nmea gear for it you can get that and a load of other data from it, if it’s a GXI

QBhoy when you say "plugged in" this like an OBD-II reader, except for boats? Is there a basic setups that the average do-it-yourselfer would be able to acquire?

Yeah. Most marine techs will have diagnostic kits to plug in. Or you can get your own cheaper kit like this

Welcome to iBOATS I Am Sam,
The Volvo Easy Connect will NOT work with your engine. You have a MEFI computer. Easy Connect only works with 2006 and newer engines.

MEFI is pretty simple and there are a number of cheap scanners available. Somebody posted awhile back here on iBOATS how to build your own for cheap.

P.S. When I ran your serial number thru Volvo. I noticed that this engine has never been registered. I suggest you contact a Volvo dealer and get it registered in your name in case there have been any recalls.

Ok. But there is certainly a readout you can get that displays engine data on all gxi engines. I know that much is fact.

works on this 2005. I think most if not all gxi engines will be capable somehow. Just like all merc mpi from 2002/2003 are.

Works on 2003 gxi engines too, just read. I’d hazard a guess that VP are being safe with their dates ?

Here is another that will work, as well as...there are a few available for all gxi. Non Evc included.

This appears to be incorrect also. The 4.3GXi-A has a 5 wire DLC. The link you posted says he needs a 10 wire DLC.

Are there gateways ways that are advertised as working with MEFI3? Yes, but most have been removed from the market because it was about 50/50 on how well they worked.
I_am_Sam Your cheapest option to get hours from this ECM is probably to go to a shop and have them connect their scantool. Or you can buy/build any marine scanner that is compatible with MEFI3

Defo the cheapest option is as you suggest, but even the basic info shows hours, as requested on the ones above.
