As the title states, i need help adding the electric start kit (part # 3R3-76300-0 and $600 worth) to my 2002 Tohatsu 30 hp 4 stroke (model # mfs 30a) tiller handle. My question is where exactly or how do you mount the starter soleniod? Also will the flywheel need to pulled to install the starter? I've got the kit, but all i've got are the parts, no instructions or anything came with it. The kit was ordered straight from Nissan/Tohatsu from an authorizied Tohatsu dealer. I have printed off the parts diagram off tohatsu website showing how everything is supposed to go, but still leaves alot of questions unanswered. Do any of ya'll have any pictures showing how the soleniod is supposed to looked mounted? Or how the whole set up will look after its complete? Any problems i may need to look out for that i'm not aware of right yet? Or maybe a good set of instructions. Also, the electric start kit on the tohatsu website shows a flywheel with the kit, also small mounting brackets, but neither of these came with the start kit i recieved. Thanks.

There are no instructions and the parts diagram is what the technicians use as a guide. If you were short something in the kit see the dealer you purchased it from.

Side note: Starter kit's are not something that should be attempted to be installed other than by outboard techs that do it as a trade. No instructions = heartache.

1. The solenoid fastens at the large electrics bracket near the front of the motor.
2. No, the flywheel does not get pulled.
3. In the shop, we use the Factory service manual and parts catalog as guides.
4. The photos on the website show generic kits -- not necessarily the exact kit you are installing. Some models of non-electric-start motors had a different flywheel, which does not have the ring gear. The flywheel for the MFS30A should have the ring gear, so you should not need a different flywheel. If you need to replace the flywheel, see any dealer.

As Elvin noted, an experienced hand will do the job faster, and without the frustrations that can come from working at this level on an OB for the first time. If you prefer to do it yourself, expect a learning curve... proceed slowly, with the manuals at hand, and understand that installing some parts (such as the neutral safety system) will test your dexterity.

If you will be doing this sort of work, I recommend you obtain and study the Factory service manual, 003-21053-0, SERVICE MANUAL MFS25A/30A, $40.00, which is available from any dealer, including several forum members... even me. The Factory manuals assume that their audience is an experienced mechanic, equipped with appropriate tools, and at least average mechanical abilities. If you find the work daunting, seek the assistance of your local dealer, or at least get a buddy with experience to help out.
