Hey everyone I used the search tool but couldn't find anything that specifically fit my question. I have a 2002 tohatsu automixing 50 hp. It takes about 10 or more seconds to turn over when I crank it up. Then when I try to put it in forward or reverse, it shuts off. I have to repeat the process 5-8 times before it finally goes into gear and starts running. After I run it for about 5 minutes, it will crank up instantly and go into gear without any problems whatsoever. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Welcome to the forums,

Seems a very low idle rpm specially at cold starts. Engine rpm should be + 900 once warmed up. Install an induction tach and check.

As Luis said. Plus, you may have soem lean condition, typically caused by varnishing in the carbs. If so, that will call for a thorough carb cleaning. In the future, be 100% sure to run the carbs out, faithfully, religiously, at the end of each and every day.

With engine on at idle disconnect engine fuel connector and let egine die of fuel starvation. You could flush engine at neutral while doing so, at idle will give sufficient time for a good flush before engine dies. Is that a tiller or remote version ?
