You can try adjusting the rod first. You may find that the pump is bad and would normally need to be replaced. The other option is to convert over to mixing the oil in the gas manually.

Don't go back to the first dealer. He's a moron.

I removed the pump on my '02 90 and use pre mix at 50:1. 2 screws hold the pump in. Remove the pump housing and on the end is the drive gear. Remove it. There is a bushing on the bottom of the housing that fits up in the hole where the shaft came out. You can remove also if it is loose. Mine was tight and I left it. That was a year ago. I left the oil in my tank as an easy way to keep the low oil warning from sounding. Could have disconnected the sensor (lt blue wires) but didn't. If the pump doesn't turn it doesn't move any oil (apparently a displacement pump) so I didn't even disconnect the oil lines. Just left everything as it was except the gear removal.

I run Pennzoil TC-W3 I get at WW. Is a synthetic blend and even though premix is 50:1 and the pump thins the mix to 80:1 at idle, I didn't notice any difference in the smoke at idle and It is hardly noticeable, even on the hole shot. But I run Sea Foam in the gas too.

If it's like my motor it's a very simple setup with an adjustable length rod that goes from the main carb linkage to the oil pump. You adjust the rod length to very the oil ratio by unattaching one end (normally at the oil pump) and twisting it a number of turns.

premix is the only way to go... I run all my Merc's at 40 to one...they don't smoke and they see 5500 all day long.......would never rely on oil pump and plastic crank gear......

Why 40 to 1? Merc recommends 50 to 1.

The manual describes the setup. Simple check and adjustment. It also describes the test for it and requires you to have oil to the engine while you disconnect the hose to measure the pump output volume. That means you have to get some 50:1 premix to it somehow.

It also tells you how to vent bubbles in the tubes and run troubleshooting tests and all. You are right in waiting for the manual. You could borrow a tank with pre mix from someone with a 3 or 6 gallon tank for the test.

In my manual it's in section 3C Fuel System, Oil Pump.

I adjust mine by trial and error. I monitor how much gas/oil is used and adjust rod accordingly.
