Anyone out there had much experience with the aforementioned 2 stroke motor -- reliability issues, performance problems, etc?

Hmmm. It is probably similar to my son's '99 2 stroke 90.

He doesn't like it. It is fussy about starting. It rattles, smokes and balks at idle and low speed. According to him, it "wont troll worth a flip".

Once it is up in the operating range, it seems to perform very well.

Had same problem as JB w/ '99 75 hp Merc 2-stroke. Took it back to dealer twice--said thats just the way they run!! Finally got enough ,traded it for 90 hp 4-stroke--problem solved !

Re: 2002 Mercury 90 H.P. Saltwater

I have a 2002 90hp Merc, not the saltwater model, but I assume very close. I have about 40hrs on the engine, after about 10 hrs it started giving me problems, Hard starting, stalling in idle after running for awhile, would not restart etc. I took it back to the dealer, the adjusted some cables, replaced the plugs, and it has run great since.

Merc used to require a 20hr service to keep the warrenty up, but they do not anymore, lets see did the motors change or are they just being cheap??

Are you having problems with yours?
