Hi Everyone,
I recently purchased a boat with an 02 Mercury 125 HP 2+2 type Saltwater engine. Im looking for specs and info on setting the base static timing at idle and WOT and base idle adjustment. I removed the cowling yesterday and discovered the spark advance rod was disconnected from the long actuator arm. I re-installed it and the idle was high. SO without knowing I turned the screw which I thought was the idle screw, which I have now learned was the base timing screw, and have messed up that adjustment which may have been off anyways.
What I have done so far is remove the spark plug ignition wires, and grounded them out with jumper wires. I have disconnected the throttle linkage at the motor side. I have used my timing light on #1 cylinder and cranked the motor over without having it start. I have adjusted the closed throttle timing to about 4 degrees ( to the left of the zero mark) and the WOT timing is set at about 26 deg's.( left of the zero mark). Is that a good starting point for the timing???
Now how about setting the out of gear idle speed to get the 1100 +- rpm's??? Is it done by turning that same base timing screw with the plastic thumb wheel on it or the one below it which requires a phillips screw driver and has a locknut?? ANd the how set the in gear idle speed to around 650+- rpm's??
I know many hands have been in this engine over the last 12 years(including mine) so I would like to get it back to where things should be, i did notice the orange paint blob on the lowest adjustment screw on the whole throttle/timing actuator arm is cracked and gone so I think that may have been mowed over the years.
Any guidance would be great, thanks again!!!

Also, there is a white line on the carb roller pawl and also on the actuator arm for that pawl (roller) which im thinking has to be aligned somehow. I know I came across info on this white line in all the threads and web pages I was reading over the last couple days trying to find the info. Again, any info would be great. I will be ordering the Mercury manual as Im getting the feeling I will be referring to it alot in the future but thats will take a week to arrive anyway. Thats a weeks less water time and fishing.

My manual is for engines in the 90s, so check for a decal on your engine with the actual specs....

Here's the pdf that is for timing and sync... It should be pretty close to what you need.

Chris........

Edit: I have checked the Merc website with your engine year, and they are calling out the same manual as I have, so it does run in to your engine. The part number for the manual is 90-830234R3. You should be able to find them on ebay for plenty less than Merc will want for a new one.

Here's one I found on my first search -> http://www.ebay.com/itm/1997-MERCUR...4R3-/161559929530?hash=item259db8e2ba&vxp=mtr

AChris you are the man!! Set everything up as per the manual. Two items that were way off was the white line wasnt even close to lining up on the carb roller and actuator arm. That required me to do an adjustment on the throttle cable barrel, but now it shifts so nicely in and out of gear with less effort. Secondly I set the base timing while cranking only at 2 BTDC and it fired right up, and then only required small adjustments as I tweaked the mixture screws.. That was off, but I had inadvertently turned that knob without knowing what I was doing, and I believe it was set wrong anyway since all other adjustments had to be reset. SO anyway, its fixed and running well now. SO off to the ramp once it warms up a bit and do my final carb settings in the water while in gear. THANKS AGAIN!

Ok now looking for some advice on setting carb idle screws from some real world experience. I think im close but want to ask. I started at 1 1/2 turns out, started up good and ran ok but with some good shake to it. Read in the manul to turn screws in to lean out til hear misfire pop the back out 1/4 turn. When I started to turn screws in the tone of motor lowered, and started to smooth out with a slight increase in rpm, but was affraid to llean too far out so chickened out and opened back up. Could someone explain this misfire pop and is it repeated popping or just an occasional misfire I will hear every few seconds. I actually went a bit more open than the 1 1/2 turns and found a decent spot but feel it could be better, so just want some expaining of the "misfire lean pop" I should be listening for.

As you heard, a 'lean pop' every few seconds.

The way I do it is to go the other way. Never heard of an engine detonating because it was too rich... Open the screws (richer) until you hear the engine slower, then back in 1/4 turn....

Chris.....
