Hi Everyone,
I recently purchased a boat with an 02 Mercury 125 HP 2+2 type Saltwater engine. Im looking for specs and info on setting the base static timing at idle and WOT and base idle adjustment. I removed the cowling yesterday and discovered the spark advance rod was disconnected from the long actuator arm. I re-installed it and the idle was high. SO without knowing I turned the screw which I thought was the idle screw, which I have now learned was the base timing screw, and have messed up that adjustment which may have been off anyways.
What I have done so far is remove the spark plug ignition wires, and grounded them out with jumper wires. I have disconnected the throttle linkage at the motor side. I have used my timing light on #1 cylinder and cranked the motor over without having it start. I have adjusted the closed throttle timing to about 4 degrees ( to the left of the zero mark) and the WOT timing is set at about 26 deg's.( left of the zero mark). Is that a good starting point for the timing???
Now how about setting the out of gear idle speed to get the 1100 +- rpm's??? Is it done by turning that same base timing screw with the plastic thumb wheel on it or the one below it which requires a phillips screw driver and has a locknut?? ANd the how set the in gear idle speed to around 650+- rpm's??
I know many hands have been in this engine over the last 12 years(including mine) so I would like to get it back to where things should be, i did notice the orange paint blob on the lowest adjustment screw on the whole throttle/timing actuator arm is cracked and gone so I think that may have been mowed over the years.
Any guidance would be great, thanks again!!!
