Hello, I recently purchased a 2002 Johnson 90hp outboard motor, model# J90 VLSNF. I was wondering if this was a saltwater motor and where can I get an owners manual for this motor, like the original manual that came with it. Also, what is the difference between a saltwater and freshwater motor? Thanks in advance, Porto

Re: 2002 Johnson 90hp fresh or saltwater?

There is not really such a thing as a saltwater or freshwater motor. There were some larger HP OMC motors called Sea-Drives, but that seemed to refer more to the mounting system than anything. Any motor can be used in either saltwater or freshwater. The only bad thing is that, if not properly maintained, saltwater will kill any outboard made. You must take very good care of an outboard and boat and particularly a trailer used in saltwater, or it will turn into a pile of rust pretty quickly

A manual can be found at www.outboardbooks.com

Re: 2002 Johnson 90hp fresh or saltwater?

Thanks for the info guys. I didn't think there was a difference either, but when I was searching this site for an owners manual for this motor, I came across this http://www.iboats.com/Johnson__J90VLSN__90hp__2002/bpe/55e19678r2 which states 'This 90 H.P. Johnson outboard motor was made for the saltwater environment.'. That lead me to believe there was a difference between a saltwater motor and a freshwater motor.

The link I was given in the first response only goes up to 1996, any other idea's where I can find an owners manual for this motor? Thanks again.....
