Just bought this 2002 Johnson 40 thing used to go on my 16' Polar skiff.

I can't find a zinc anode on the motor itself? If found one little one on the motor bracket, but none on the motor? The trim tab is not made of zinc. Is there not one?

The paint is starting to flake off in a lot of places with some typical corrosion. I plan on repainting it. Is this common for Johnson's in salt water? I'm replacing a 94 suzuki with this and it has no paint flaking issues.

Is there any better spray can paint I can use that won't flake off other than the factory replacement paint?

I want a factory service manual, not finding them on ebay for my particular model, where do I get one besides the local dealer?

There is a zinc anode #0173029 on some models screwed to the inside of the port transom bracket.

Additionally, some have the gearcase anode behind the thrust bushing on the prop shaft, held on by two screws.

If you have a T&T, that also has an anode.

Copy this link to your browser without the quotation marks for the BRP FAQ site:

And, this one for the parts diagrams:

Anodes can corrode very quickly in salt water. Check for continuity with an ohmmeter. Once they build up resistance, they are useless.

A very good protection against surface corrosion like you are describing is to paint annually with one of the non-metallic Gearcase paints that are specially formulated for that purpose. They help to reduce the conductivity of the Gearcase when exposed to salt water. You will need to prime the exposed damaged areas once you have sanded them, then repaint and add a clear coat.

You can also add an anode to the top of your anti-ventilation plate.

If you trailer your boat, along with the flushing you can help by washing the outer motor after every use and wiping it with WD40 or similar product.

Thanks for the quick responses. Heading to the marine shop now to pick up some zinc phosphate primer and some paint. I'll pick up another zinc while I'm there and stick on somewhere.

I paid $1525 for it with power T/T, oil injection, suposedly in good shape with controls. Sounded like a good deal, hope this repaint job isn't just the beginning of problems.
