I am considering a 2002 Honda 50hp t&t elec. st. I have contacted 4 dealers and get different response as to what the new compression numbers are.
This engin test at 103 per cylinder at sea level. Does anyone know what new sea level compression was?

Thanks

These engines need to be tested at wide open throttle which means you will either need to cheat the neutral safety switch or have someone hold it in that possition while it is cranked. If this is a rope start you will be doing alot of pulling before that guage peeks off.Numbers do'nt really mean much untill you see a huge difference between one cylinder and the others.Remember those guages are human made and take a beating in they're lifetimes and can vary a great deal from manufacturer to manufacturer. If you really feel your numbers are not to your liking, then its time for the leakdown test.

I have very little difference in compression from one cylinder to the other. I was told by a dealer that new compression on this engine was 212. Well 212 what, PSI etc etc. That number seemed high so I hoped that someone out there had a shop manuel with compression numbers. Probably being to concerned, however, I live in Colorado where every pound of compression matters.

Thanks

These motors should be around the 200 psi mark and all cyclinders within 10% of each other and throttle open full at time of test.As Justin said, gauges vary so use the percentage as your main factor.

After all that compression advice ,we'd think one of those shops would be happy to hear the thing run and go from there.Do'nt lay down until you hear it run.
