Hay all, occasionally, my 2002 Evinrude 115 will not start. When you turn the key you can hear a click at the motor, but the starter will not turn. After a few minutes, the engine starts normally. This has happened both while the engine has been cold and warm. With the click that I am hearing, I would assume that the solenoid (if in fact the motor has one) is working, but the starter isn't responding. Any ideas or experience with this? Thanks in advance for your help!!

Tons of experience ;)

Welcome to iboats.

How long has the motor been mounted? Since New?

Believe it or not 95% of starter electrical problems are the connections and wires. Before you throw any money at the motor you need to remove your battery cables and then one at a time remove each connection on the motot, sand it off with some 150 sandpaper and re-install. Do that for all the connections.

Carefully examine both ends of your battery cables. If you can see under the insulation jacket and it looks black keep that in mind. Reconnect and try your motor. Do the battery cables get warm/hot? If they do it is time to replace the cables.

Corrosion gets under connections that "feel and look" tight but are corroded. The cables are the same way they corrode on the inside and the resistance goes way up.

I would give that a try first.

Re: 2002 Evinrude 115 Starter Problem

Thanks for the help! It's an 02 motor, which I believe was installed as a leftover in 06. I figured that I should be looking at the connections under the cowling, the battery system is fine, I built a 2 battery system this year and all of the connections are tight (I checked). Guess I'll have to pull it out of the water, If I try to take the cover apart at the dock I will be donating the hardware to champ since I drop stuff on dry land! Thanks!!
