Hi, I am a first time poster, long time reader. I am going to look at a boat this evening and wanted to know if anybody had any insights into possible issues with this particular model etc. I have been boating for many years, but this is the first time I am purchsing one myself and I don't want to get a lemon. I have done extensive research and it seems this boat is in good shape. There is one thing that concerns me and I was hoping someone could enlighten me as to the white powder/corrision on the outboard. I was thinking it had something to do with the anodes, but I am not sure. I attached a picture of what I am talking about. Hope someone can help!

I don't see anything on that drive that would concern me, just needs a good cleaning is all get your CLR out and get after it, if the rest of the boat is solid and your lake test is good I wouldn't be worried about the scale on the drive, it can be cleaned up pretty easy, I would look for a drive shower to make this issue easier to deal with in the future.

It shows that this boat has been used, prop has normal wear on it and no apparent dings, the skeg shows the same.

Is that cracks around the housing? If it is check the transom for rot.

Thanks so much! I just looked into the drive shower and it explains it perfectly. Seems very straight forward to fix.

Thanks for the input, actually it is not. It is the quality of the picture. I had to put it the MS paint because the file was too large and it made a line.

Re: 2002 Bayliner 1950 Capri Classic

SCALING comes from hard water deposits, water gets kicked up while at speed lands on the top of the drive and the heat from running at speed evaporates the water leaving the minerals, if the drive is cleaned regularly then this is not a difficult issue to clean up but if left to build up it can be a pain but still nothing more then elbow grease to remedy, a shower keeps the upper portion of Merc drives cooler and helps to eliminate the issue, it seems that this could be an indication the previous owner liked to run(like me) and simply didn't want to put in the time to clean it up(unlike me LOL). I would not be concerned, I would however go ahead and replace the annodes/corrosion protection but that is just me easy to do simple preventative maintenance for a new to you boat.

I have a SIMREK on mine and I highly recommend them, top of the line work and great customer service.

Drive showers are for cooling the outdrive. Hard working boats and hard runnin' boats tend to get them to protect the fluid and internals from heat related stress.

Am I missing something?

An outdrive should have proper anodes and it wouldn't hurt to keep it clean and shiny. But drive showers? Maybe I am missing something...

Getting back to the subject:D. Looks like a clean boat. How did you make out?
May want to start her up for a bit and check gauges for water temp and oil pressure. Should be around that time for thermostat and water pump or impeller change.
Any more pictures of the boat?
