Going to look at one tommorrow for my 12' river jon boat project. The seller says it's an electric shift (gears on the handle). Do they hold up as well as a regular shift lever or is there a history of failures for these? Just trying to do some homework before a purchase. I'm hoping for a good report as this motor looks near new and it's at a great price. :D

Its not electric shift, the throttle is just connected to the shift linkage.

The problem is not that the system is weak, its that if used incorrectly you can bang it from forward to reverse (or the other way) too fast and possibly damage the gears.

I have an 8HP and love it, for the type of fishing we do here this type of shifting its great. These were very popular designs around here and there were no complaints of failures.

Just an update. I bought the motor and am pretty happy with it. It makes the little 12' jon go fairly good. Cranks on first pull every time. The throttle shift is pretty neat..I like it. Changed LU oil, spark plugs and am good to go.
