My cousin has a 2002 60 Merc 4 stroke on a 16' Williams Craft. If we put in somewher and run it for about 15 min stop and fish then run it again, it is 1 mph(GPS) slower than when the motor was cool. We have also found that if you take the calen off, where the air can get to the motor, it picks up 300 rpm. Is this normal or should we have this checked?

I really have enjoyed reading through this forum. Thanks, in advance for any info.

Some more questions.
1.) How many running hours are on the motor?
2.) Are you sure you are not going with the current one way, and against it going back? Remember GPS measures speed over land, and you could have a strong current and really make a speed difference.
3.) Has he talked to the dealer he bought it from? Since this is a fairly new style engine, they would certainly be interested in getting feedback on it.

I have told I know at lest 3 to 4 people
about this. To where the engine is starving
for air.
WRITE J.B. CORNWELL MEMBER NO. 1031
I would say he could tell you all about it.
I do not remember who it was but if you do
as search you my be able to find out who it
was.
I don't know if they got the colen so thigh
or if it just bad air,but I'v read this same
thing alot.
GOOD LUCK
REX A. I've got a 2002 MERC 60HP 4-stroke too. I'm kind of interested in what you're going through...just out of curiosity, what kind of speeds are you getting? And what kind of 16' boat is it? I'm running a 17' semi V alum. What's it like coming out of the hole?

Hope it all works out.

SeaDawg -
1.Brand new motor less than 15 hours
2. We took in the fact of the current. Even if you run in the same direction still lose a mph when motor gets warm.
3. Dealer told us this was normal for it to slow down when motor gets warm. Also told us it was not good for the motor to get that much air. (this was in reference to the calen being taken off) Said it would make the motor over rev.

Rex - thanks I will do some searching

BBogey - The Boat is a solid fiberglass tri hull stick steering boat. Similar to the kingfisher tri hull just not as deep. Boat weight is around 900-950 lbs with motor and gear. We get 38.5 mph @ 5900rpm when motor is cold with 2 people in boat. 37.5 mph @5600 rpm when motor warms up with same two people in boat. We are running a stainless steel Stelleto prop 14 pitch. We also have aluminum wedges between the motor and transom which provides us more trim. Not much of a hole I would say above average on the hole but again with the boat being solid fiberglass with no wood in it we are not pushing a whole lot of wieght.

hondon - new as the motor is we did not become aware of it until the last fishing trip. We were in Florida fishing in saltwater and figured maybe it was the tides. When we got back we put it in a lake and did some testing.
2. W.O.T. 5900 rpm

Thanks everyone for you responses.
