just bought a 40 merc and most times when i come to a stop and let it idle there is noticable gas film on the water. Is this common or is it a carb adjustment or something?

Something is leaking somewhere. But then again, are you still in the breakin stage running double oil?

prob got about 8 tanks through it. By the way a buddy of mine that bought one at the same place had to go and get the carbs set cause it wouldn't idle so just wondering if it could be the carbs

Could be...ALL MERCURY dealers are supposed to PREP all engines they sell now and test run them, even if you buy "in the box". I found this out direct from Mercury When I bought my 40 hp 3 cylinder short shaft last year. Seems they did prep it half a s s but sat on the shelf for 18 months 'cause it was a short shaft which I stumbled across and bought. Carbs were gunked up and so was the fuel pump.(And this was a brand new motor?!) And they did not adjust the idle either. Took it back and they made it rite when I told them what Mercury said.
