I have a 2002 Merc 125 HP engine.
SN OT491799
Model 1125412ZD
Two recent events.
1) Heard extra loud "clank" when putting into forward after a days fishing on my trolling motor, rarely need the big motor where I was fishing.
2) Next trip out (couple days later) used the big motor in forward only for maybe 3 to 5 minutes before again going on the kicker for the rest of the day. When I got home I drained my gear oil and found 75% water.
What I've done so far is change the O-Ring seal around the shifter which I found by pressure testing the lower unit. Pressure test after replacement and everything was fine, no leaks.
Re-install lower unit and shifter will go fine into Forward and Neutral but is locked up in Reverse, won't move.
Dropped lower unit back out and "manually" moved shifter and here is what I found.
In FORWARD, I can spin the prop by hand in a clockwise direction (can hear a clicking sound) and when I spin it counterclockwise it locks up with no movement.
In the NEUTRAL, I can spin the prop both clockwise and counterclockwise with NO clicking noise, moves freely back and forth with no resistance.
In REVERSE...I get a mixed bag, I can get it to where I hear a clicking noise turning the prop counter clockwise but I can also turn the prop clockwise with no resistence. It will also lockup to where I get no movement at all when I try to turn the prop just by moving the shift lever ever so slightly.
All these test were done with the Lower Unit off the boat to eliminate any control cable adjustments.
Getting back to the loud "clank" I heard a couple of days ago, I can honestly say I don't remember having to use REVERSE since then so is it possible something happened to REVERSE then and I'm now seeing it during the lower unit installation?
Can I run my boat in FORWARD only without doing any further damage if there is a REVERSE problem? Just trying to get the last week of fishing in.
thank you in advance for any input.
