So… I have a 2002 115hp Johnson outboard and this weekend, it went dead. I was cruising for a couple of minutes and turn the outboard off. Floated for awhile and fished, was floating up to a dock and went to turn it back on the reverse but it had a no crank. After some time, we tried again and nothing. The trim was also dead, on the outboard and throttle, but we had power everywhere else. We get a millisecond of a crank sometimes but then just silence. We would get a faint audible alarm when turning the key but not the full “beep” noise. Thank was full of gas. While messing with switches, all of them worked but sometimes the fuel gauge would go crazy. I’m just at a lost because after sitting for a day, it was fine and had no problems… any thoughts?

Battery is going intermittent ? Check date on it. Corroded battery posts and clamps on the posts.

Brand new battery, even switched them around on the water. Same issue. Sorry I didn’t include that.

battery is step#1 in the checking process...
.next comes cable crimps (loose oxydized)
next are engine side connections and full wiring checks
dead tilt and trim is frequently a bad fuse somewere maybe a bad ground B- batt to engine frame
next are voltage tests to see anything suspiciuous power wise... looks good won't cut it
next is basic stuff like sparks ?? fuel flow issues (filters)

next is the book....

Varying voltages to different parts ? Varying resistances. DISCONNECT battery terminals !!........... THen using the correct tool. RETIGHTEN ALL SCREWS.............. All of them. Re tighten all butt splices and any wire ends held down by a screw or bolt.
INCLUDING any big negative cables and bolts
Been there done that on hundreds of connection. INCLUDING a few BROKEN ARCING wires with a break in the good looking length of wire in a bundle of wires............ Ibuprofen trouble shooting.
I am the only living Pit Bull on trouble shooting anything.
