2001 Yamaha outboard

I have a 2001 model yamaha115 hp outboard that has a knock that sound similar to a rod knocking ? but the noise is coming from the lower unit? the gear oil was a little low but not bad. and there are minimal shavings on the magnetic plug. it kinda has that sound of the "African Queen" its a pretty good knocking.

There are 2 "spring washers" that go just above the water pump that are designed to remove slight up and down movement or play in the drive shaft, which can produce a knocking sound. Maybe check/replace your water pump impeller and install new spring washers properly, and hopefully end your problem. While you're doing the pump also check/grease your rubber drive shaft bushing.
