boat starts up great, runs great
if boat sits for 2 hours our more, sometimes, after starting, when going to get up on plane, over 2000rpm, engine will kick , buck, sound like it will blow up, so I drop down under 2000rpm, and it will run smoothly back to the dock, if I accelearate over 2000rpm, repeats bucking, vibrations, knocking.
Sometimes engine will run great all day, and all the way back to the dock
had new oil sensor put in, new throttle cable, carbs cleaned, new water seperator, new fuel, fuel is treated at each fill up, marina cant reproduce the problem when I bring it in,it's intermittent
help!

Sounds like an ignition issue all the way. I bet it is the powerpack, timing sensor, or stator. Have you checked CDI electronics yet?

Intermittent electrical/electronic problems can be a challenge to troubleshoot. Maybe check all wires, connections, grounds and fuses for slight amounts of looseness or corrosion. Maybe a chafed wire rubbing on another? That CDI Screw Terminal Power Pack diagram should be helpful to determine if Replacement is required! My motor is a 1999 90C Yamaha very similar to yours so I'm very interested at what you find. Good Luck and keep us posted!:)

After 3 years of intermittent problems with this......brought to shop 3 times, no luck. they couldn't reproduce the problem, so they couldnt fix it. very frustrating
Spoke with another local marina service manager, explained the issue. These folks recently bought the marina next to where I launch.
They have certified Yamaha mechanics, and sell Yamaha. Service Manager tells me to recreate the problem myself, and then call him when I have it misfiring.
Spent a week ago Friday on the water by myself trying to re-create problem, which is boat will not go over 2000RPM engine will kick buck mis-fire.
Started and stopped boat 8 times....from 8:00am to Noon.........I'd start her up, and go for a ride for 15 mintues at around 4500RPM, no issues no problems...
Finally when I was about to give up, I start it up for the 9th time that day, and go to head out on plane, and it buck, kicks, misfires......(yay!)
Call the marina, mechanic meets me at the dock. He tries to re-create issue at the dock tied up under high throttle idle.......it won't do it.
So we head out to do an actual ride..........no wake for 10 minutes, then hit it, and woo hoo it bucks kicks, mis-fires!!
Mechanic takes cover off, sits near engine well, starts disconnecting wires from CDI, tells me do it again, still misfires.........tries different wires..............we do this for half hour..........trouble shoots it to be the "coil" stator......
Order part, mechanic installs,,,,, I run the boat last weekend Sat. and Sun................no issue!!!!!!!
Engine runs 4500 RPM 33mph....................with 2 people on board, this is on a Carolina Skiff 198 DLV............
sweet ride, like it should be,
Hopefull that's it.................am taking her out this Saturday and Sunday........finally feel like we got it!!

I also forogt to mention when the mechanic put a meter on the coil after we got it to mis-fire, it was way off the specs in the service manual, that helped in troubleshooting

Hope that takes care of the problem.

May need to see about a different prop, that motor should see about 5500 at WOT

See what the performance was and what prop the used on a set up like yours on this site www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/products/perfbull.aspx

May not run that way often, but you need to post that info as that is how you tell if propped correctly

Awesome to get something fixed that has been a problem for so long.Sounds like you got a good tech.I'd stay on his good side and maybe even bribe him with some cold beverage for his trouble.

Just checked out the Performace Bulletin.'
I am running with the exact prop and part number as in the bulletin
performance wise at 4500 the bulletin shows 32 mph, right what I have
At 5550 it should do 40 according to this, with 2 people on board, but I havent seen 40, high 30s....
