Engine alarm came on constant, oil pressure dropped; tried to get back to the marina at idle, but then started getting an engine knock which increased / decreased with RPM level. Did I throw a rod, is it a valve issue, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

How bad did oil pressure drop? Did you check oil level? By the sound of it doesn't sound good though.

Was it hot at all? Or just bad oil pressure? What level if oil is there now? How does the remaining oil look or smell? Is there any oil in the bilge?

welcome aboard.

most likely what happened is you lost oil pressure for what ever reason and took out a rod bearing.

reasons to loose oil pressure: water in oil from a failed oil cooler or head gasket loss due to overheating, loss of oil from a failed oil cooler, leaky oil pan, etc,

when the alarm first sounded, you should have pulled out of the navigation ways, keyed off and dropped anchor, then assessed your situation.

I suggest checking your oil like NHGuy stated. if it is black, and smells like burnt oil, the motor was overheated. if there is no oil on the stick, you lost oil. if its coffee colored and thick like pudding, you have water in the oil

since the motor started knocking, it will need to come out

I agree it is going to require a rebuild to some extent. Can you get away with just rods and mains or a complete refit is yet to be seen. also have to figure out if it lost pressure due to mechanical failure (oil pump) or if it ran out of oil (leak, consuming).

Won't know until you take it out, put it on the stand and start measuring everything.

The chance of winning the lottery is higher than the chance of an oil pump failing

Had an oil pick up fall off of a chevy oil pump once (many yeas ago) from then on I always tacked the pick up to the bump body with a little bit of brass.

The oil is a light carmel color. We checked the oil before we started our day. It looked great. It was a little low after this happened. I didn't really see any oil in the bilge. Water temp never got above 180 so it didn't seem to overheat. I'm going to pull the motor and get it on the stand next weekend. I'll post more details after I pull the pan and have a look at the main bearings. Thanks for the comments!!!

Well that's positive. I wouldn't be surprised if the oil pickup took a dive off the pump either. If it's still on there you will be looking for oil restrictions.
In fact, if you haven't pulled the engine yet, change the oil filter and briefly start the engine to see if you get oil pressure.
I'd still want to check the bearings though.

So I'm going to go with a new long block. Lots of metal in the oil pan. Main bearings on #1 and #8 are gone; cylinder walls are scores. Engine has 549 hours so instead of a rebuild I'm going the long block route. Any suggestions on picking a motor company would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks

Also, the engine serial number has worn off the plate. The stamp on the block is 10243880. I know it's a Mercruiser 350 Mag Mpi. What else do I Nasdaq to know to make sure the LBC I buy is correct? Thanks again

Anyone supplying a 1996 and up vortec base engine like Michigan motorz or center state engine. Only thing you might want to verify with them is the can not sure the the mag uses a bigger cam. New base engines are about $2800 plus freight from thes guys on eBay. You can save a few bucks getting a reman but typically they don't have the tin, water pump, flywheel, or balancer so if your paying to clean those parts and swap over not sure there is a savings. Rapids marine seems to have good reviews on remand, but I never bought from them. I did have a good experience with Michigan motorz buying a partial engine last fall to repower a new to me boat. PO cracked the block.

Crap that was verify the cam not can...

Did you get a root cause on the damage? At that many hours shouldn't have blown unless you had no oil. Did the pick up come off or oil pump seize?

As I was preparing to disconnect everything to pull the motor, I pulled the drain plugs. As l was doing that I decided to strain the water as it drained out of each plug. The starboard side actually had some pieces of metal (pieces of main bearings, maybe) in the lowest port and I also noticed some oil in the water. So I'm assuming a blown head gasket. Now why that happened, I'm just not sure. The boat never overheated when this happened. My son and nephew replaced the serpentine belt the last time they went out, but they swear the engine did not overheat before they shut it down.
