We just recently purchased a 2001 Smoker Craft Pontoon. There is no owner's manual with it and I can't find anywhere online to get one. The Smoker Craft Website doesn't even have pontoons anymore. Does anyone know where I can get a manual?

Thanks-I found a Bentley manual and there was nothing about the boat itself--just general safety info and stuff. I really just need to know about the controls...on the throttle there is a button that I don't know what it is for. The motor (up/down) control is also on the throttle on the left side. This is a big black button on the right side. It's not the choke, I don't think.

My Dad had a 2000 Smoker Craft w/ the 90 HP Johnson. My friend now owns that same boat.

That "big black button" sounds like the what we call the "cold start" button if it is located where the throttle pivots. This devise allows you to disengage the transmission and throttle up the engine. If that is what it is; you push it in and, while holding it in, you can push your thottle forward. Some of the more mechanically minded in here can probably describe it better once you have identified the control.

Because the throttle and shift functions are operated by the same lever, there is no way you can "fast idle" the engine without having it go into gear. So there are two types of control boxes. One has a separate, flat lever on the top of the control box. You raise the lever to fast idle the engine separate from the normal throttle/shift lever. If the control box is behind a panel and all you have is a throttle lever, then the button works as BoatAddiction described. You push in and hold the button while you move the throttle/shift lever forward. The engine will then fast idle without gong ito gear. To reengage the gears, pull the lever back to neutral, you hear a slight snap, and the lever now works normally. You don't mention what kind of engine you have but I will assume it's a carbureted engine. With a carbed engine, you need to push in on the key while cranking to "prime" the engine for cold starts. The cold start process is as follows: 1) Raise the fast idle leverl or set the control for fast idle, 2) squeeze the primer bulb in the fuel line until firm. 3) Turn the key to RUN (not START). 4) push in on the key for a count of 8. 5) Turn the key to START. When the engine starts, set the fast idle for a comfortable idle until warmed up. If the engine tends to die down during warm up, push the key in (prime again briefly) to give it an extra shot of fuel. When warm the engine should start with a simple turn of the key. If you have a fuel injected two or four-stroke engine just turn the key.
