my 2001 225 optimax continues to foul plugs. dealer says that i run too long at low rpms (idle too much). fouled plugs usually come after winterization or cold weather. do not use fuel cleaner (quickleen etc.) and run 87 octane as suggested by dealer. have had all munufacturer recalls taken care of. two different mechanics have said that is how these motors run and to deal with it. would like suggestions as to what i can do as plugs can get expensive and i worry about future motor problems.

A 225 Optimax was never intended to be a trolling motor. Maybe you should consider a 9.9 or 15 hp kicker for all your trolling needs, and use the big motor as intended.

should i run higher octane gas or does it matter?

i have new plugs, quickleen, and need to fill it up.

i will then take it on a test drive and check the plugs.

i forgot to add that i was told to run only the high end optimax oil. my old mechanic had told me it was ok to run the other cheaper mercury oil. i am going back to the optimax oil to try to remove all variables.

Re: 2001 optimax 225

Well after having fouled plugs on the bottom two cylinders several different times and being told a different reason by my mechanic for the last couple years, my 225 optimax finally blew up. $6500 for a new powerhead. Mercury and my dealer both told me to get lost. No compensation after a lifetime of problems and a known problem with this year of motor. Motor was used for a one week trip and one weekend a year. Very few hours. If you have one (2000 or 2001) run dont walk. Just a matter of time. Will most likely buy an evinrude next time. Definately not a Merc. They do not stand by their products.
