I inherited a 5hp 4stroke nissan motor. The motor has been sitting up for 3 years. It has hardly any hours on it, it was a back up for a larger motor.
I cannot get the motor the stay running. Even if I continuously spray gas or starter fluid in the screen. The fuel tank, bulb and fuel line are new. I cleaned the carburetor and jets out with seafoam. I did not rebuild the card. Just soaked and reassembled. I put in a new spark plug. The motor will run for 5 or 6 seconds spraying directly into the screen but then dies. The kill switch clip is in.
Please let me know if there is anything else I should be trying. Thanks for all the help.

Welcome to Iboats,

Is tank's air vent fully open ? When engine dies will restart immediatly, or will take some time to start back again and die soon afterwords ? Are all electrical grounds and contact points immaculate clean and in shinny state ?

The motor will restart back up right away if I spray starter fluid in the vent but kills after a few seconds. Everything is clean. I'm assuming its a carb issue but I thought it would continue to run as long as I am spraying fuel in the screen.

If starting the engine while combo is on water, is it possible to engage gear and throttle way more passing fast idle and check if engine will run ok at higher rpm. If so, there seems to be a crud issue on carb's low fuel circuit.

If it is anything like my Honda 8HP, and it is a problem with the low speed carb circuit (or any carb circuit, really) I would not waste time with Seafoam or carb spray - get the carb dip in the big can and soak in that, just make sure you soak only the metal parts.

Here's what I found in my "new to me" carb:

Seafoam wouldn't have touched that stuff!
